Not vampire weather in Forks (With today’s Forks and Port Angeles “Twilight” celebration stories)

Forks officials last week asked residents to cut back on water use

because city wells are about 30 percent below capacity.

It’s been an unusually dry summer in Forks, normally one of the wettest

towns in the United States.

Rainfall is about 23 inches below normal so far this year — and water

use may be higher, too, because of thousands of visiting “Twilight” fans.

The Forks Visitor Center registered 55,600 guest book sign-ins in the

first eight months of this year.

It had 18,700 for all of 2008.

Forks itself has only 3,200 residents.

“Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer picked Forks as the location for her

vampire-teen romance because of its reputation for gloom and rain-filled

skies.

Mike Gurling, Visitor Center manager, says some “Twilight” fans complain

about the clear, sunny skies.

“They have an expectation of it being rainy here,” Gurling said.

“Sometimes we apologize and say ‘I’m really sorry it’s not raining here.’”

Water restrictions will end when the rains return.

Forks normally gets about 120 inches a year of the wet stuff.

Originally designated TP-133, it is currently named Island Champion after going through several owners since the army sold it in 1947. It is now owned by Debbie Wright of Everett, who uses it as a liveaboard.
