PORT ANGELES — About 50 law enforcement officers and public citizens gathered at Veterans Memorial Park on Friday to commemorate National Law Enforcement Memorial Week.
Jessie Davis, daughter of Wally Davis, a Clallam County sheriff’s deputy who was killed in the line of duty in August 2000, kicked off the annual ceremony by singing the national anthem.
Clallam County sheriff’s deputies, Port Angeles and Sequim police, Olympic National Park rangers, U.S. Border Patrol personnel, Coast Guard members and State Patrol Troopers attended the half-hour ceremony on Lincoln Street.
County Commissioner Mike Chapman read a proclamation recognizing Saturday as National Peace Officers Memorial Day.
National Law Enforcement Memorial Week is held on the second full week in May.
Benedict said the Sheriff’s Office “got serious” about the local observance after Davis was killed.
