OLYMPIA — The Olympic National Forest plans to reopen campgrounds for the summer season this month and next.
The Hood Canal Ranger District will open campgrounds at noon on:
• April 26 — Seal Rock Campground.
• May 1 — Satsop Campground.
• May 18 — Coho, Brown Creek, Big Creek, Hamma Hamma, Lena Creek and Collins campgrounds.
Falls View will not be open this season because of work to remove root rot infected trees, the national forest said in a news release.
Forest personnel hope to open Dungeness Forks Campground by Memorial Day.
Storm damage must be cleaned up before it can be opened to the public.
Winter storms have left much debris on trails and caused some slides on roadways of the national forest.
Following cleanup of a slide leading to the Mount Walker overlook, the gate leading to the overlook is expected to be opened by April 20.
Due to storm damage, the Bear Gulch Picnic Area will offer limited amenities this year.
The road to Staircase is expected to be open by Memorial Day.
The Pacific Ranger District announced the following campground openings in the Quinault area:
• April 15 — Willaby Campground.
• May 1 — Falls Creek and Gatton Creek campgrounds, weather permitting
Campgrounds in the Forks area still have storm repair construction going on and opening dates for those campgrounds will be announced at a later time.
