A 30-year veteran of the National Park Service was named Monday as Olympic National Park’s new superintendent.
William G. Laitner, 56, expects to take the position in mid-May.
He was named superintendent by Jonathan B. Jarvis, National Park regional director, who is based in Oakland, Calif.
Laitner will be paid between $92,496 and $120,245. He refused to specify his salary, but said it was in the middle of that range.
Laitner succeeds David Morris, who resigned as Olympic superintendent at the end of January to volunteer with the Peace Corps in Lusaka, Zambia.
Sue McGill, who has been at Olympic since November, will remain assistant superintendent of the 922,651-acre park, which has its headquarters in Port Angeles but much of its acreage in Jefferson County.
