ENCHANTED VALLEY — When Amy Work and her two hiking companions forded the Quinault River’s east fork on Monday, the water was below their knees — and relatively calm.
It was a different river when they returned Wednesday afternoon. The Quinault stem had two days of steady rains — about 6 inches total — feeding it.
She entered the river anyway. Despite the ropes and walking stick she and her companions carried, the torrent swept the petite University of Washington graduate into the waters.
The last time her two unidentified companions saw her, she was struggling in the raging waters, trying to remove her backpack.
