TACOMA — Opponents of broader partnerships for gay couples will have to abide by Washington’s campaign finance laws while their lawsuit challenging those rules moves ahead.
A federal judge has denied emergency requests from a group called Family PAC, which wanted to suspend a ban on large campaign contributions and a requirement to identify donors.
The brand-new political action committee said that the laws were blocking its ability to collect last-minute political contributions in the week before Washington’s general election.
The case revolves around Referendum 71, which would broaden domestic partnership rights for gay couples and unmarried seniors. Balloting on the statewide referendum is currently under way.
Family PAC says the state campaign finance laws violate free speech rights. But state attorneys are defending the voter-approved campaign finance laws.
