Concert in a barn

QUILCENE – The last of the Olympic Music Festival’s summer concerts will be this weekend.

Concerts will be on Saturday and Sunday in a restored 100-year-old barn near Quilcene, just south of State Route 104 along Center Road (watch for the sign off 104).

Concert-goers can purchase seats inside the barn and sit on comfortable pews or hay bales, or purchase lawn tickets and hear the concert directly outside the barn.

Concerts start at 2 p.m. Barn doors open at 1 p.m.

This Saturday and Sunday, the program will be performed by Teresa Yu and Paul Hersh.

Their program:

  • Mozart: Sonata for Piano Four Hands in D Major, K. 381.

  • Dvorak: From the Bohemian Forest, Op. 68.

  • Judith Lang Zaimont: Sonata Piano Four Hands “Snazzy.”

The music festival is in its 24th season.

Tickets are $15 to $26, phone 206-527-8839, click on www.olympicmusicfestival.org or buy them at the barn.

    Garage sale

PORT ANGELES – Thousands of new and used items will be on sale this weekend at the 13th annual Clallam County Historical Society Garage Sale.

The public sale – which will be at the former Lincoln Elementary School at Eighth and C streets in Port Angeles – will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and Saturday.

The sale will continue on Sept. 14 and Sept. 15.

The sale will include furniture, fabrics, hardware, garden items, electronics, men’s and women’s clothing, kitchen items, linens, crafts, jewelry and books.

This weekend, prices will be as marked on each item.

Sept. 14 will be Half Price Day and Sept. 15 will be Buck-A-Bag day.

The annual sale is the society’s largest fundraiser of the year.

All proceeds will go to renovation of the former school – purchased by the historical society in 1991 at a cost of $210,000 – which one day will house the Clallam County Historical Society Museum and Resource Center.

    Swap meet

SEQUIM – The Park Place Market is going to the dogs, and cats, today and Saturday.

The swap meet – from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 290 W. Washington St., Sequim – will feature adoptable cats and dogs from the Clallam County Humane Society as well as pet paraphernalia, said Hope Stime, market owner.

The humane society will offer potential pets from noon to 3 p.m. both days.

Stime wants to raise money to support local animal rescue groups, so she’s asking vendors to contribute a portion of their proceeds to the humane society and the Welfare for Animals Guild, or WAG.

Dare to Dream Entertainment will perform from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Last Friday and Saturday, Stime held a fundraiser for the family of Jesse Marunde, the Sequim strongman who died suddenly on July 25.

Stime plans to shut down the Park Place Market forever at the end of this month.

As her last hurrah, however, Stime wants to have one more fundraising meet.

She’ll urge vendors to donate proceeds from the Sept. 21-22 market to the Sequim Veterans of Foreign Wars post for telephone cards that will be sent to servicemen and -women in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    Potluck picnic

FORKS – The West End Historical Society’s annual potluck picnic is planned on Saturday.

    AAUW meeting

The ice cream social will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the home of vice-president JoAnn Thompson, 175 Alderview Drive, Sequim.

The event will open the current year’s program series for the Clallam branch of the AAUW.

Members are invited to bring guests and plan to tell about summer adventures and activities.

    For more information, phone 360-417-1152.

SAPPHO – The annual Bear Creek Potluck and Chili Cookoff will be Saturday.

The cookoff will be next to the Hungry Bear Cafe at mile post 206 on U.S. Highway 101.

Live music is planned during the day.

Cooks can begin setting up after 8 a.m. with a cooks’ meeting at 11:30 a.m. and cooking to begin at noon.

Cooking will stop at 3 p.m. for judging and all are invited to feast.

    For more information, phone 360-327-3225.
