POULSBO — With his white hair slicked back and a blue scarf tied around the collar of his khaki shirt Sunday afternoon, longtime Port Angeles resident Erling “Bub” Olsen was the image of a Boy Scout.
And as a young scout pinned a red, white and blue badge to Olsen’s chest, the older man realized his decades-old scouting dream.
Olsen, 84, finally received Eagle Scout status, 70 years after earning it.
“I can’t hardly believe it,” a smiling Olsen said after the ceremony. “It’s just a great day, one of the best days of my life.”
Close to 150 family members, friends and scouts watched Sunday as Olsen completed his journey to the highest rank in scouting.
He may be one of the oldest people ever to receive the award.
