PORT ANGELES — A panhandler was taken to Olympic Medical Center on Monday afternoon after he allegedly pulled a knife on one man and was pushed by another at the Safeway east of Port Angeles.

Daniel James Jackson, 61, of Greeley, Colo., remained at OMC in Port Angeles at 6 p.m., said Sgt. Eric Munger of the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office. Jackson’s condition was not immediately available.

Munger anticipates that once Jackson is discharged, he will be taken into custody at the Clallam County jail for investigation of attempted robbery and assault in the second degree.

Jackson suffered facial and head injuries when an unidentified Bremerton man pushed him after Jackson threatened the man’s son-in-law with a knife, Munger said in a prepared statement.

The Bremerton man, and his daughter and son-in-law who were visiting from Texas — who also were unidentified — were harassed by Jackson when they stopped at the Safeway store at 2709 E. U.S. Highway 101 for lunch at about 12:35 p.m., Munger said.

“According to the victims, Jackson was quite aggressive in his requests for money,” Munger said.

“They ignored Jackson and continued to their vehicle.”

However, the Bremerton man and his son-in-law returned to Safeway to get napkins to clean up a spilled lunch.

“Once outside, the son-in-law was again harassed by Jackson,” Munger said.

“When he told Jackson he did not have any money, Jackson produced a knife and threatened him,” Munger added.

The Bremerton man came out of the store, saw the situation and shoved Jackson, who fell to the ground and was hurt, according to the deputy.

“Other witnesses reported that Jackson had been in the area all weekend and was harassing other customers,” Munger said.
