OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Park officials have requested a second helicopter capable of carrying 2,000-gallons buckets of water to try to suppress the 280-acre Griff fire.
The fire expanded beyond a portion of the western confinement line of the 2,000-acre containment zone Monday, causing park officials to establish a new western confinement line on Tuesday.
The amount of acreage in the new confinement zone had not been calculated Tuesday night.
Park spokeswoman Barb Maynes said most the fire’s growth is on the western flank where it burned beyond the original containment line.
“It continues to burn in a steep and remote area that is too dangerous to send firefighters into,” Maynes said.
The fire, started by lightning about three weeks ago, is burning in rugged high country area about 1½ miles northeast of Hurricane Hill, west of the lodge at Hurricane Ridge.
