PORT TOWNSEND — Parking will remain free in Fort Worden State Park this year.
This morning, a member of the Fort Worden Advisory Committee will deliver three checks worth $25,000 to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission at a public meeting in Lacey.
“It means that parking in Fort Worden State Park is free,” said Tim Caldwell, a member of the advisory committee and general manager of the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce. “We’ll have 11 months to come up with a plan for 2004.”
He said he will deliver the three checks — a $15,000 check from the city of Port Townsend, a $5,000 check from Jefferson County and a $3,000 check from the Chamber of Commerce.
The Friends of Fort Worden, the Coast Artillery Museum and local residents and businesses also chipped in to raise $3,000.
The chamber previously donated $2,000, which kept parking free at the park in January.
Because of budget cuts last year, state parks were forced to seek additional sources of revenue, including parking fees.
