PORT ANGELES — City police and the State Patrol will be keeping an ear out for trucks without mufflers on Tumwater Truck Route in Port Angeles.
The emphasis patrol was prompted by noise complaints, police said.
“Of particular concern are trucks driving down the Truck Route and using ‘un-muffled’ compression brakes,” said Port Angeles Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith.
State law requires vehicles weighing 5 tons or more be equipped with compression brakes and an operational muffler and exhaust system to prevent excess noise.
The penalty for loud brakes is $250 for the first violation, $500 for the second violation and $750 a pop for each subsequent violation.
Port Angeles police will be assisted by troopers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division of the State Patrol.
“Patrol emphasis will be directed at various times of the day and evening,” Smith said.
The law for compression brakes, or jake brakes, can be found under Revised Code of Washington 46.37.395.
