SEQUIM — A 50-year-old Sequim man is in critical condition in a Seattle hospital today after he was struck by a car while walking on a sidewalk in a hit-and-run Thursday morning, Sequim police said.
Scott Franklin was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center after he was hit, Sequim Detective Sgt. Sean Madison said.
The driver, Gene S. Mensik, 51, of Sequim, made his first appearance in Clallam County Superior Court this afternoon. Bail was set at $100,000. Formal charges are to be filed by his next court appearance on Tuesday.
Mensik hit Franklin in the 600 block of East Washington Street at about 7:15 a.m., said Sequim Lt. Sheri Crain.
Mensik continued driving until he was arrested in the 600 block of West Washington Street for investigation of vehicle assault and hit-and-run injury, she said.
Crain said it appeared that Mensik was intoxicated.
