The romance of the rails is an intrinsic part of two businesses in Discovery Bay and Sequim.
A bed and breakfast and an ice cream parlor, candy store and deli are housed in antique cabooses and rail cars.
The latest railroad-theme establishment is the Red Caboose Getaway.com — that’s also the name of a Web site for the bed and breakfast.
Red Caboose, located at 24 Old Coyote Way in Sequim, opened on Oct. 1, but owners Olaf Protze and his wife, Charlotte, are still in the process of renovating four of five cabooses into cozy rooms, each with a different theme.
One caboose is completely finished and ready for guests — the Orient Express room.
“We had three guests in the first week,” Protze said.
“Others have shown a lot of interest and enthusiasm.”
Depot at Discovery Bay, which sells bulk candy, lunch items and 16 flavors of ice cream, occupies three cabooses and a yard engine.
The business, located at 281023 U.S. Highway 101, is owned by Bruce and Joyce Broyles.
