Peninsula College to celebrate Spring Arts Week

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College will celebrate Spring Arts Week.

The free annual celebration will take place at various venues on the college’s Port Angeles campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., except for the spring jazz concert, which will be performed downtown at Field Arts and Events Hall.

The college sponsors Arts Week because it believes art helps to develop skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, communications and teamwork, skills that prepare students for future employment and a fulfilling life.

Events on Wednesday include:

• The Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest will be in Pirate Square from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• The Tidepools Book and Art Fair will be in the Pirate Union Building from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The annual magazine features poetry, prose and art by students and local residents; preordered copies will be available for pickup at the fair.

The fair also will feature art written and created by Tidepools partners, author book signings and information about local literary and art organizations.

• A performance by the Peninsula College Vocal Masters is set for 7 p.m. at Maier Hall.

• The Very Short Film Festival will kick off the festivities at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Little Theater.

The festival will feature short films created by students in the spring drama class.

Tickets are free, but seating is limited.

Activities on Thursday include:

• A presentation from the Digital Story Telling Showcase at 11:30 a.m. in Room M133 at Keegan Hall.

The project is an ongoing engagement experience built with the stories of current students to inspire new students to attend Peninsula College.

• Studium Generale at 12:35 p.m. in Little Theater will present the annual English Essay Awards and Creative Writing Reading.

In addition to award presentation, the Studium will feature students reading from their award-winning essays.

• The Spring Jazz Concert by the Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble will be at 7 p.m. in Field Arts and Events Hall, 201 W. Front St.

The 16-piece big band will perform classical and modern jazz with the college’s Vocal Masters as special guests.

The all-ages concert is free although donations will be accepted; the Sunset Lounge will be open.

• On Friday, the Tidepools Magazine’s 60th issue launch party will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at ʔaʔk̓ʷustəƞáwt̓xʷ House of Learning.
