PORT ANGELES –Clallam and Jefferson counties’ auditors may be forced to return the checks of small-truck owners who overpay license-tab fees due this month.
And local and state officials say residents can blame possible returns on the implementation of Initiative 776, which officially takes effect today.
Under I-776, small-truck owners and automobile owners now pay $30 for license tabs.
Previously, owners of trucks with gross weights of 4,000, 6,000 and 8,000 pounds paid $37, $44 and $55, respectively.
“The renewal (check) may be a few dollars too much,” Jefferson County Auditor Donna Eldridge said. “If that’s the case, we can’t accept it, and we will have to mail it back.”
Officials in the Clallam County Auditor’s Office referred calls seeking information to the state Department of Licensing.
