PORT ANGELES — The political election season has produced a new twist on an old identity theft scam.
Someone has been calling local residents claiming to be from Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie’s office and asking for a donation.
If the person says yes and asks where to mail the check, he or she is asked for a credit card number “to save on processing costs and time.”
Karline Roseveare, office manager at the Republican Party headquarters in Port Angeles, said the person who alerted her to the scam said the caller mentioned several local Republican candidates who needed support — and even offered to get his supervisor to confirm the call.
She said the scam artist is probably calling Democrats, too, trying to steal their credit card information.
“I’m sure the Democrats are going to get taken, too,” she said.
“I just want to make people aware so innocent people don’t get their money taken.”
