Peninsula Home Fund hits $213,299

Money helps residents of Clallam, Jefferson counties

The Peninsula Home Fund broke $200,000 by the first week of the new year.

The fund had grown to $213,299.

The money is dispersed by Olympic Community Action Programs (OlyCAP). It goes only to people living in Clallam and Jefferson counties. Funds help them cover small expenses so they can survive a crisis and return to working on self-sufficiency.

The fund is not a welfare program. Money is used to give Peninsula residents “a hand up, not a handout” to get through emergency situations. The Peninsula Home Fund creates a safety net for residents when there is nowhere else to turn.

The money collected in 2022 will provide assistance to North Olympic Peninsula people throughout 2023.

The end of the campaign, which began Thanksgiving, is not the end of collection of donations. There are people who donate each month of the year to keep the fund robust.

All contributions are federally tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law for the year in which the check is written. No money is deducted by the Peninsula Daily News for administration fees or any other overhead. All of it goes to OlyCAP, which takes 12.5 percent to assist with administrative costs.

OlyCAP has helped many with warm clothing in cold months and fuel so they could get to work, according to Anna Hannon, executive coordinator. OlyCAP case managers also can at times combine money from Peninsula Home Fund with vouchers for such as to help people with groceries, she said.

Personal information of donors is kept confidential. PDN does not rent, sell, give or otherwise share addresses or other information with anyone or make any other use of it.

To request assistance from the Peninsula Home Fund, fill out an online inquiry by clicking on the “Ask for General Assistance” button at www.olycap.org or going directly to olycap.formstack.com/forms/general_inquiry; or by phoning OlyCAP offices in Port Angeles — 360-452-4726 — or Port Townsend — 360-385-2571.

Physical offices remain closed to the public due to COVID-19 health concerns, but services are available.

OlyCAP has a cap of $500 for those who need a one-time infusion of funds.

To donate, write a check to “Peninsula Home Fund” and attach it to the coupon that appears in today’s PDN and is on the PDN Facebook page at www.facebook.com/PenDaily News. About 150 to 200 people jumped into 49-degree water at Hollywood Beach on Jan. 1, 2025, for the 37th annual Polar Bear Dip. The air temperature was about 39 degrees, so it was a short, brisk dip that they did three times. There was a beach fire to warm the dippers afterward as well as two portable saunas in the parking lot. The event was sponsored by Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County under the leadership of organizer Dan Welden. Hot drinks, tasty muffins and a certificate for participants were available.
