OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Hurricane Ridge Road opened to skiers, snowballers and frolickers Friday, kicking off the season at the popular North Olympic Peninsula winter destination.
After a wind and rain storm lashed the Peninsula Wednesday, cutting power to whole neighborhoods and causing an estimated $3 million damage to the park, there was the chance that the 18-mile road to the top of the ridge would not be opened.
The road to the ridge opened to visitors at 11:30 a.m. Friday and stayed open Saturday, said Barb Maynes, park spokeswoman.
She didn”t know how many visitors showed up on the first day of the season.
The road is usually slated to open at 9 a.m., if possible.
