Tuesday’s voter approval of state Initiative 747 won’t cause major changes to the budgets of major municipal governments in Clallam or Jefferson counties.
Initiative 747, approved by 59 percent of voters statewide, requires state and local governments to limit property tax levy increases to 1 percent per year unless voters approve a larger increase.
In Clallam County, the initiative is passing with 8,698 “yes” votes, or 64.62 percent. “No” votes so far total 4,762, or 35.38 percent.
Jefferson County voters are approving I-747 by a vote of 5,256 to 3,789, or 58.11 percent to 41.89 percent.
Late-arriving mail-in ballots in Clallam and Jefferson counties will be counted Friday.
Although the initiative limits tax increases without voter approval, North Olympic Peninsula municipal governments anticipated the measure passing or considered other factors in limiting proposed property tax rate increases.
