It’s the off-season.
Hotels, motels and bed-and-breakfasts have numerous empty rooms.
And U.S. Highway 101 traffic, previously filled with out-of-town motorists traveling to Clallam and Jefferson counties, has slowed to a trickle.
The bustling tourism season that flourished last summer is hibernating on the North Olympic Peninsula.
But local tourism officials are trying to reawaken tourism this winter by offering seasonal discounts and new events.
For the first time, North Olympic Peninsula Visitor and Convention Bureau officials are coordinating an effort to offer half-price winter discounts at more than 30 Olympic Peninsula lodging businesses.
The program, which will eventually allow guests to make reservations online, is based on a similar program offered in Snohomish County in conjunction with the state Department of Tourism.
“The numbers showed that it was very successful,” said Kristi Agren, bureau director of tourism and marketing.
