Peninsula: Mega Millions curiosity slowly building

Vendors of Mega Millions lottery tickets said sales for the multi-state jackpot have grown consistently on the North Olympic Peninsula since tickets went on sale Wednesday.

The first drawing to include Washington lottery ticket sales for the jackpot — which has grown to an estimated $17 million — takes place at 8 p.m. today.

Tickets for the lottery, which up until a few months ago was known as The Big Game, are being sold at more than 2,600 retailers nationwide, including more than a dozen locations in Clallam and Jefferson counties.

“Everyone has been trying them — it is a novelty and we will see how sales will go,” said Brian Lovik, assistant manager of Washburn’s General Merchandise in Neah Bay. “Everyone is hoping to win.”

Washington is the first state west of the Mississippi River and the 10th to join the lottery.

Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday nights at 8.

Lottery results will be published in the Peninsula Daily News.
