PORT ANGELES — When Stephen Connors steps off the plane at William R. Fairchild International Airport this evening, his family will be waiting with signs, smiles and maybe some sighs of relief.
Connors, 21, a 2nd class petty officer in the Navy and a Port Angeles native, is returning from the Persian Gulf, where he has been serving aboard the destroyer USS Higgins with the Constellation carrier battle group during the war in Iraq.
He has been aboard the destroyer for five months.
Connors is among the first North Olympic Peninsula residents — if not the first — returning home from the war.
