BRINNON — Residents of southeast Jefferson County will have to find another way to reach Mason County after several small slides closed U.S. Highway 101 near Lilliwaup on Monday.
Joyce Komac, maintenance superintendent for the Washington State Department of Transportation, said the highway will be closed at least through this morning to allow geologic experts to determine whether the ground will continue moving.
Heavy rains Sunday and Monday morning apparently contributed to several slides that completely covered the pavement. Komac said a work crew was clearing the first slide when a second occurred south of them, blocking them off.
Slides in Kitsap County also blocked roads for brief periods Monday, but Jefferson County officials said no roads were affected by slides within Jefferson County.
