Rain has soaked the western end of the Olympic Peninsula since Tuesday morning, creating swollen rivers and record-setting August rainfall amounts.
The National Weather Service’s forecast calls for showers diminishing today and a mostly rain-free weekend.
The Western Regional Climate Center in Reno, Nev. reported 7.49 inches of rain this month at Quillayute Airport between Forks and LaPush.
Last year only 1.21 inches of rain were recorded for the entire month.
The highest amount of rainfall for August in the past 10 years occurred in 1991, when 15 inches were recorded, the climate center reported.
“This is an unusual amount of rain in the area for summer,” said Chris Burke, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Seattle.
