PORT TOWNSEND – Petitions circulated at Port Townsend businesses had collected by Thursday more than 100 of 455 signatures of registered city voters needed for a November vote on the form of city government.
In a petition drive led by Port Townsend businessman John Sheehan and former City Councilman Al Frank, residents are being asked if they support abandoning the city council-manager form of government and reverting to a strong mayor and council system.
Petitions began circulating on Tuesday.
Sheehan, who set up the hot dog stand he has owned for 22 years across Madison Street from City Hall, said he believes the council-manager form of government is failing in Port Townsend.
“It works for the bureaucrats, but I don’t think it ultimately works for the citizens of Port Townsend,” said Sheehan, who has lived in Port Townsend for 35 years.
