Robin Swanson displays her first-prize pumpkin, weighing 171.1 pounds, at Evergreen Country Estates on Sunday.
The neighborhood south of Port Angeles holds a giant pumpkin contest each year, with the growing season starting around May 1 and neighbors gathering for the weigh-in and a pumpkin potluck party each fall.
Dan Welden, who started the friendly contest 12 years ago, gives each of his neighbors pumpkin seeds he buys from the Northwest Giant Pumpkin Growers Association.
“Horse manure is the magic elixir and lots of watering,” Swanson said of her prize-winner.
Other contests included the tallest sunflower, which also was won by Swanson with an entry 11-feet tall.
