PORT ANGELES — A freak accident involving a pickup truck, a light pole and a car on which the light pole fell has cut power to about 950 customers east of Port Angeles.
The pickup truck, driven eastbound on U.S. Highway 101 by an elderly woman, witnesses said, sheared the light pole in front of Mount Pleasant IGS market near the intersection of Mount Pleasant Road on Monday afternoon.
A 1993 Toyota Corolla driven by Wayne Billmark, 54, of Sequim because the recipient of the falling pole, which crushed the Corolla’s roof on the passenger side.
Billmark was unhurt. The driver of the pickup truck, which suffered little apparent damage, was unidentified.
A Clallam County Public Utility District spokesperson said crews were able to switch about 950 customers whose power went out because of the mishap to other lines. Most power was restored within minutes after the 4:30 p.m. incident.
Traffic on U.S. 101 was slowed for about a mile in either direction.
