PORT TOWNSEND — A Polynesian voyaging canoe will arrive in Port Townsend today at approximately 4 p.m. and be welcomed by a local delegation at 4:30 p.m.
Tours of the canoe, the Hōkūleʻa, will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Northwest Maritime Center dock in downtown Port Townsend.
The canoe is scheduled to depart Port Townsend sometime Wednesday morning.
The Hōkūleʻa was originally scheduled to arrive in Port Townsend on Aug. 22, but it diverted to Seattle and Tacoma instead.
The canoe will be welcomed ashore by local representatives from the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe as it visits hundreds of indigenous communities around the Pacific Rim.
The Hawaii-based Hōkūleʻa began its journey in Juneau, Alaska, on June 15, and will visit 36 countries and archipelagos, nearly 100 indigenous territories and more than 300 ports.
The ship’s progress can be checked on its website, hokulea.com.
