PORT ANGELES — The man drug task force detectives claim was the leader of a cocaine distribution ring was released from jail Friday after the bail requirement was waived as the result of an argument about evidence in the case.
Defense attorney Karen Unger, Port Angeles, wanted Judge George Wood to dismiss charges of possession and delivery of cocaine against Bernard “Pete” Barnes because prosecutors hadn’t handed over evidence by the required Dec. 5 deadline.
Compact discs containing the estimated 7,000 pages of evidence were made available to defendants and their attorneys Friday.
Barnes, 50, of Port Angeles was jailed on $1 million bail following his Nov. 14 arrest. He has been charged with possession of cocaine and conspiracy to delivery the drug.
Although released from jail, Barnes’ travel is restricted to Clallam County, he can’t communicate with other defendants in the case and he has a curfew from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Ten other people also have been arrested and charged with crimes ranging from possession and delivery of cocaine to money laundering.
