PORT ANGELES — Police plan to excavate one of two sites searched last week that may solve the mystery of a woman who disappeared 33 years ago.
No date has been set, but investigators hope to dig under a slab of concrete at the former home of Bertha Louise Burke within the next two weeks, Sgt. Erick Zappey said Tuesday.
Burke, 29, disappeared Feb. 20, 1970, from her home at 129 E. 13th St., leaving behind her three young children and all of her personal belongings.
Her case was quickly classified a homicide but investigators never uncovered enough evidence to determine what became of Burke.
Seizing on recent technology, police last week brought in a two-man FBI team that uses ground-penetrating radar to detect objects and oddities underground.
