PORT ANGELES — Leonard Beil was elected 2004 president of the Port Angeles Port Commission by his commissioner colleagues Monday.
Bill Hannan of Sequim was elected vice president. Newly elected Commissioner John Calhoun of Forks was elected secretary after taking his oath of office to join the three-member panel.
Beil, a Port Angeles resident, is serving his first six-year term as commissioner after having been elected in November 1999. He defeated incumbent Dick Foster of Port Angeles for the District 2 seat, which represents the Port Angeles area of the county.
Beil was elected to the three-person commission on a reform platform and has fought to reduce the scope and frequency of the Port commission’s closed executive sessions, increase public participation in Port decisions, develop a map detailing the Port’s numerous properties, enact audiotaping of Port meetings, and make Port meeting minutes more widely available.
Before Beil was named president, departing Commissioner Glenn Beckman of Forks was honored for his 12 years service on the board.
