PORT ANGELES — Preparing for a possible germ warfare attack doesn’t involve purchasing a gas mask or hoarding antibiotics.
To prepare, “you eat well, sleep well, exercise well. Keep up on your vaccines where available,” epidemiologist Bill Edstrom told the audience Tuesday at the emergency management conference being held downtown.
The Washington State Emergency Management Association is conducting its fall educational conference through Thursday at the Red Lion Inn.
The Washington National Guard adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Timothy J. Lowenberg, gave a graphic presentation detailing the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to outline the sort of well-planned events emergency services officials must be prepared to handle.
Edstrom told the crowd, comprised mostly of city and county emergency officials from throughout the state, about the present threats of bio-terrorism.
Edstrom is employed with the Spokane Regional Health District as a bio-terrorism surveillance coordinator.
Having a three-day emergency kit, similar to that recommended for earthquakes, is recommended, Edstrom said. It is also essential to prepare for your pets.
Buying a gas mask is probably useless, Edstrom said.
