PORT ANGELES — Contractor bids for the long-awaited Carnegie Library rehabilitation project will be opened on July 2.
The one-year project to repair the downtown landmark is estimated to cost between $850,000 and $950,000.
The final project cost will depend upon how much money the city has available. Projected funding is $912,049, including library construction bond proceeds, 2000 and 2001 capital facilities monies, 2001 budget money and Walkling Trust money.
More amenities may be added if more money becomes available. The total dollar amount available will be announced at the bid opening.
The city is repairing the historic Carnegie Library building, which served as the city library until 1998, as part of a cooperative project with the Clallam County Historical Society and other local governments.
The library was designed by architect Harrold Ginnold. It opened in 1919 and underwent a major expansion and remodel in 1962.
