PORT ANGELES — A ceremony will be held in Port Angeles on Friday in honor of fallen law enforcement officers.
The National Peace Officers Memorial Week ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park near the Clallam County Courthouse, Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict said Tuesday.
It will honor local, state and federal law enforcement officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty.
Clallam County commissioners Tuesday signed a proclamation recognizing Monday as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and the week of May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Week.
The proclamation read by Commissioner Bill Peach calls on citizens and organizations to commemorate law enforcement officers who have established an “enviable and enduring reputation for preserving the rights and security of all citizens.”
“We further call upon all citizens of Clallam County to observe this week in honor of those law enforcement officers who, through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or have become disabled in the performance of duty, and let us recognize and pay respect to the survivors of our fallen heroes,” the proclamation reads.
Last year, a crowd of about 100 gathered for the National Peace Officers Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in Port Angeles.
It was dedicated to Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Wally Davis and U.S. Forest Service Officer Kristine Fairbanks.
Davis was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call Aug. 5, 2000.
Fairbanks was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious vehicle on a Forest Service road Sept. 20, 2008. Her daughter, Whitney Fairbanks, is a Port Angeles police officer.
