SEQUIM — This city’s interim city manager and police chief stands corrected by the neighboring town’s attorney.
Robert Spinks, Sequim’s interim manager and chief of police, is recommending that his city convert its part-time lawyer, Craig Ritchie, into a full-time staffer — plus hire him a deputy.
This change, Spinks says, will save Sequim money on contracting out for prosecution services, as it has done for years.
In a report to the Sequim City Council on Monday, Spinks noted that Sequim would see no increase in the cost of legal services — $292,221 this fiscal year — even with the added staffing.
The chief also provided a comparison with Port Angeles: That city spends $1,159,012 on 5.73 full-time equivalent positions: three attorneys plus three support staffers, he said.
But a few minutes before 6 p.m. Wednesday, Port Angeles City Attorney William Bloor, having read the report in that day’s Peninsula Daily News, sent an e-mail to Spinks.
