PORT ANGELES — A more extensive review that will include an archeologist has slowed installation of a Waterfront Trail bridge across Ennis Creek.
So the City Council authorized the city staff Tuesday night to spend up to $20,000 beyond the $80,000 already approved for the project. The Peninsula Trails Coalition will contribute up to $11,000.
City Councilman Richard Headrick said the installation required for the bridge is more extensive than was anticipated.
The Peninsula Trails Coalition has about $11,000 left in its bridge budget, but the new installation requirements could require an additional $10,000, Headrick said.
Coalition leader Jeff Bohman said the group thought it would be able to cover the costs until the design came back. The original $14,200 estimate had swelled to $21,400 because of additional foundation reinforcement, he said.
Then the coalition learned that Ennis Creek’s east bank is six feet higher than its west bank and the ground isn’t fill — so an archeologist must be hired at a cost of up to $2,400 to determine any “cultural resource element,” he said.
