PORT ANGELES — The city will be more attractive to businesses seeking to relocate after the City Council voted Tuesday to grant the city manager authority to waive development fees for “significant economic development projects.”
“This is directly aimed at the issue of competition with the city of Anacortes for Westport Shipyard,” said City Economic Development Director Tim Smith before the unanimous vote.
Westport Shipyard is deciding between Port Angeles and Anacortes as a locale for a plant worth up to $12 million which would employ as many as 200 people with an estimated $8 million payroll. The plant would produce 164-foot luxury yachts worth $30 million.
Port districts in both cities recently agreed to sell the company the land it wants to build the facility. A decision by the company could be announced this week.
