PORT ANGELES –Daishowa America Inc. officials are investigating a boiler malfunction last week that caused thick black smoke to billow from a stack.
Daishowa Mill Manager Harold Norlund confirmed Friday that the No. 8 bark-fired boiler began emitting the thick smoke suddenly Wednesday morning.
Port Angeles residents tipped Daishowa officials of the situation by calling the mills’ hot line when they noticed the unusual smoke.
Norlund said mill workers promptly switched to oil burning to stay in compliance with their permit.
“At the mill, we pride ourselves on being in compliance,” Norlund said. “We are not sure what happened — this is rare.”
Norlund said mill officials are not sure how long the thick smoke billowed from the stack.
