PORT ANGELES — School officials say enough resignations, retirements and contract expirations are in hand to spare the school district from having to fire teachers to balance the budget in the coming school year.
“We have about two dozen teaching vacancies, and we are reducing 12.1 positions,” Superintendent Gary Cohn said. “There will be reductions, but without teacher (reductions in force).”
Cohn said the elimination of 12 teaching positions and one administrative post will bring the district in line with state funding formulas.
School officials, meeting in several planning sessions during recent weeks, found that the teacher position reductions could be accomplished without layoffs, Cohn said.
“It will be done through the elimination of one administrative position, the loss of teachers on one-year contracts, the loss of current retire-rehire teachers and through resignations or retirements,” a district statement said.
