PORT ANGELES — Volunteers and city crews are putting the finishing touches on the Port Angeles Off-Leash Dog Park, city Recreation Services Manager Richard Bonine said.
“We’re just about done with it,” said Bonine when reached by cellphone from the dog park Wednesday afternoon.
Although he declined to estimate when the park would be finished, Bonine said an opening date will be announced soon.
“We’re trying to work on ceremonies for a ribbon-cutting,” he said.
“We’ve got volunteers doing everything they can to get it put together as soon as possible.”
The dog park is located on a gently sloping 1.85-acre site in Lincoln Park east of William R. Fairchild International Airport.
It will be accessed from West Lauridsen Boulevard.
Volunteers, including members of the Port Angeles and Nor’wester Rotary clubs, are building the park through a series of work parties, the last of which took place Saturday.
Crews have removed Scotch broom from the site, installed fence posts and installed a chain-link fence.
The park will be overseen by the city of Port Angeles, which contributed $10,000 toward the effort.
Donations account for about $8,000, Bonine said.
Next week, volunteers plan to dig trenches to install water lines for thirsty dogs.
The dog park will have two areas, with about one-third set aside for smaller dogs and a larger area for bigger canines.
To date, at least 65 volunteers have been involved in the project, Bonine said.
It will be the North Olympic Peninsula’s second official free-run dog park.
The Sequim Dog Park, east of the Guy Cole Convention Center at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave., covers more than 1 acre.
It celebrated its fifth anniversary last April.
