PORT ANGELES — Questions about the upcoming Eighth Street bridges project can be asked at a workshop Tuesday.
Project diagrams and photographs will be on display, and people can talk informally with staff members from the city and project consultant Exeltech Consulting Inc. of Olympia.
The open house will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers of City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.
A short presentation is set for 6 p.m. to discuss issues such as construction materials and methods, streetscape options, environmental impacts and mitigation, and alternative traffic routes.
The city is planning to replace the two Eighth Street trestle bridges towering over Valley and Tumwater creeks beginning next summer.
The project could cost up to $20 million and take up to two construction seasons.
Slant-leg design
The council selected a slant leg design from among eight bridge schemes in March, then in June chose steel over concrete as the construction material.
Now the city will submit the project’s “type, size and location” study to the state Department of Transportation for approval at the end of July or beginning of August, city traffic engineer Jim Mahlum said.
