Port Angeles: Elwha Fish Co.’s brand new brand logo drops Hegg association

PORT ANGELES –Elwha Fish Co. Inc. has unveiled a new logo to complete its transformation from the former Hegg & Hegg Smoked Salmon Inc.

The red, black and white logo features an image of a thunderbird with its wings extended. The head of a two-headed serpent is at the end of each wing, and a salmon is shown in the thunderbird’s talons.

The new logo now graces the wall of the company’s 801 Marine Drive building in Port Angeles as well as the labels of the company’s products.

It was designed by tribal artisan Al Charles, Jr., who also carved the totem pole at the Dream Playground in Port Angeles’ Erickson Park.

“He is quite a talented young man,” said Ken Foster, who works as a consultant for the Lower Elwha in addition to his regular duties as Clallam County Public Utility District No. 1 auditor.

Charles said the new logo is a representation of the Lower Elwha Klallam people.

“The thunderbird is a common symbol of the co-Salish people,” he said.

“The two-headed serpent is in many of our stories and salmon is the subsistence of life for our people.”
