PORT ANGELES — An environmental organization that has followed the Rayonier mill site cleanup from the beginning claims the cleanup plans proposed by the company, the Lower Elwha Tribe and the state Department of Ecology are “woefully deficient.”
The Management Plans for the Remedial Investigation of the Marine Environment-Volumes I-III, Interim Actions Work Plan-Volume IV, and the Agreed Order were released on March 6. The public has until April 5 to comment on them.
Darlene Schanfald with the Olympic Environmental Council said after reviewing the plans, “Not only did the citizen coalition recommend the plan not be released to the public without a number of significant changes, but so did the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and Department of Health.”
Schanfald said what the plans lack are sampling data that would better protect public health and the marine resources.
