PORT ANGELES — Legislation introduced by the U.S. House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee on Tuesday includes the allocation of $21.7 million to fund next year’s phase of the Elwha River restoration project.
Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Bremerton, said Tuesday the subcommittee provided the total amount requested for next year’s work to prepare for breaching the Elwha River dams.
Dicks is the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee.
Complete removal of river’s two dams — Elwha and Glines Canyon — is scheduled for 2005.
The budget bill announced Tuesday would allow the project to restore fish runs on the river to continue as scheduled, Dicks said.
Work on water mitigation issues is scheduled to begin next year.
