PORT ANGELES — A former hockey player and coach will lend his background and expertise to the effort for an ice rink in Port Angeles at a meeting tonight, Councilman Gary Braun said.
Supporters of the proposed project will hold their second meeting at 7 p.m. in the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St.
Braun said Jim Walker, who played and coached hockey for 30 years, will share information with the group about how to advance the ice rink effort. A July 22 meeting drew about 15 people.
“We’re continuing to gather information, so hopefully we will have a lot more information since the last meeting,” Braun said.
“People coming out of the woodwork for this project. People are stopping me on the street and telling me they hope it succeeds because Port Angeles really needs it,” he said.
Supporters concede they have no cost estimates, no location and no funding sources in mind yet, but they’re continuing to look.
Braun first publicly presented the idea during a Chamber of Commerce luncheon in March.
Braun views the project as economic development, citing the $700,000 generated in the last year by visitors to sports tournaments promoted by the city’s Park and Recreation Department.
