Port Angeles: Independent investigation upholds findings of jail suicide

PORT ANGELES — A Kitsap County deputy coroner has upheld the initial finding of suicide for a man found dead in a Clallam County jail cell last September.

Miles Eli Schulmeister, 19, of Port Angeles strangled himself Sept. 25, sheriff’s deputies and other Clallam County officials concluded.

Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney Chris Shea, who is also the county coroner, asked for an independent investigation.

Deputy Kitsap County Coroner Aaron Davis collected statements from Schulmeister’s family, his last probation officer and other officials in the criminal justice system.

“I would say that the decedent took his own life and there are creditable (sic) statements by his probation officer, supporting documentation as well for the previous suicide statements made by the decedent himself,” Davis said in his report.

“Case is a suicide in conjunction with the investigation by Clallam County Coroner’s Office and the Clallam County Sheriff’s Department as well as further investigation by the Kitsap County Coroner’s Office.”
