Port Angeles lifeguards awarded for saving child’s life

PORT ANGELES — Four William Shore Memorial Pool lifeguards were recognized Tuesday for saving the life of a 6-year-old boy.

Port Angeles Mayor Dan Di Guilio and Fire Chief Dan McKeen presented the Rescue and Lifesaving Award to Cory Nelson, Sandra Guoan and Connor Reid at a meeting of the William Shore Memorial Pool District commissioners.

Cassidy Turner, who also received the award, was working at the public pool at 225 E. Fifth St. in Port Angeles at the time and was unable to attend.

They rescued the boy, who was underwater and showing no signs of life, on May 1.

Pulled from water

They pulled him from the water and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The boy’s vital signs returned within minutes.

His name is not being released at the request of his family.

The Port Angeles Fire Department assisted with the rescue.

“They definitely stepped up and met the expectations that we have of them,” said pool Executive Director Steve Burke.

The lifeguards also will receive the Red Cross Heroes Award on Nov. 3 during a Red Cross awards dinner at 7 Cedars Casino.
