Port Angeles man charged with child rape

PORT ANGELES — A man arrested last week for investigation of possessing child pornography has been charged with first-degree child rape and related charges connected with a 2-year-old victim.

Dwayne A. Marcum, 39, of 201 W. 16th St., Suite C, in Port Angeles will be arraigned at 9 a.m. Friday on charges of first-degree rape of a child, first-degree child molestation, sexual exploitation of a minor and first-degree possession of a depiction of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

The rape and molestation charges carry maximum sentences of life in prison.

All four charges relate to a 2-year-old female victim, according to the criminal complaint filed Friday in Clallam County Superior Court.

There is also reason to believe that another child was sexually assaulted by Marcum, according to the probable-cause statement.

“Investigative steps are being taken to identify the child, including forensic exams of the digital media collected as evidence,” the statement said.

Marcum was being held Monday in Clallam County jail in lieu of $750,000 bail.

He was arrested July 24 on the basis of a digital camera and a computer flash drive that were found July 20 in a wooded area west of Port Angeles, authorities said.

He told authorities that the camera looked like one he owned that was missing, that the flash drive was his and that it contained child pornography, according to the probable-cause statement.

Marcum said he had received the flash drive anonymously in the mail from someone trying to blackmail him several years ago and did not put the images on it but did not report the alleged blackmail attempt to the police.

He also said two pictures of him on the flash drive were of him molesting a child, according to the probable cause statement.

Marcum said the flash drive also contained movies and pictures depicting child pornography, movies, child modeling photos and child nudity.

“Marcum stated that he needed mental health help, and he agreed that this issue with children was something he needs help with,” according to the statement.

“Marcum stated he has been diagnosed with a split personality, and he doesn’t remember doing these things,” the statement said.
