Port Angeles man sentenced for possession, theft

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man has been sentenced after a jury found him guilty of possession of a controlled substance and attempted third-degree theft.

Ronald C. Critchfield, 45, was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Erik Rohrer to 45 days in jail and a year of Department of Corrections supervision, and was ordered to obtain a substance abuse evaluation, according to a news release.

Prosecutors had recommended a sentence of 60 days in jail, supervision and treatment conditions at the time of sentencing.

On April 22, two neighbors caught Critchfield trying to steal a battery from a trailer, the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said.

The neighbors kept Critchfield on his stomach and prevented him from leaving until police arrived, prosecutors said.

When police arrived, they found a bag of methamphetamine where Critchfield had been lying. He admitted to trying to steal the battery but claimed he didn’t know anything about the meth.

He has two prior felony convictions for delivery of a controlled substance-heroin and three prior gross misdemeanor convictions for third-degree theft, prosecutors said.
